How to Choose Your First Luxury Watch

The best first watch is the one that leaves the safe. Before brand, decide on wrist presence: a 38-40mm case sits close and quiet under a cuff; 44-46mm reads as a statement. Try both if you can — photographs flatter every case size equally, wrists do not.
Movement is the second decision. Automatic watches feel alive — a sweeping seconds hand, the small satisfaction of a wind-up — but they gain or lose a few seconds a day and need periodic servicing. Quartz is unfussy and accurate to the second, at the cost of some of that mechanical romance. Neither is 'better'; they are different relationships with the object.
Finally, buy for the strap you will actually wear day to day, not the one in the photo. A steel bracelet goes anywhere; leather wants a little more care and a slightly more formal life.
